Michael Lamb (trumpet); Lloyd Wright (guitar); Paul Grainger (bass).
Musically speaking this was faultless. It's always good to hear Gruppenführer Lamb away from the confines of the SSBB enabling him to be freer and to be given more exposure. Don't get me wrong, he's tops in either format but a change is good to keep the player and the listener on their toes.
Equally good to have Lloyd Wright back on the jazz scene even if only briefly. His guitar/bass duo feature on All the Things You Are reminded me as to how a good jazz musician can still find something new to say on what, over the years, is probably the most played tune in jazz!
Lloyd Wright is such a player.
I'm sure that if I walked into a jazz club in the Outer Hebrides Paul Grainger would be on bass. Ubiquitous should be his his middle name and justifiably so. He handles gigs in many styles, trad, Latin, bebop, contemporary, whatever, with seeming ease.
So we had the ingredients for a perfect Sunday afternoon's jazz didn't we?
Not quite, the picture quality was poor and, initially, so was the sound although that did improve as the minutes ticked by.
Still, in these times, we have to be thankful for small mercies and the music was great - back again next week same time (2:00pm).
