The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Glenn Crytzer live streaming from NYC - Dec. 27, 1927

Mike Davis (trumpet); Ricky Alexander (clarinet); Glenn Crytzer (guitar); Andrew Hall (double bass)

December 27th, the year is 1927. What to do? Take in a ball game? Take in a Broadway show? No, go online to catch Glenn Crytzer's weekly show from Manhattan, NYC. Well, if the internet had existed back in the day this would have been the option. Each week Crytzer's shtick is to play tunes from a given year. This week 1927 was in the spotlight. Aiding our host were ever-present Mike Davis (trumpet), Ricky Alexander (clarinet) and string bass man Andrew Hall.
Trumpeter Mike Davis, at the last count not quite thirty years of age, just keeps on getting better. Today he was in scintillating form. It begs the question: How good will he be in, say, ten years time? In fact, how much better will he be this time next week?! His break on Armstrong's Hot Five recording of Once in a While was something else!

Crytzer said he'd whittled down a set list from a list running into the tens including I Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man of Mine. What's the odds of this happening...? Showboat premiered at the Ziegfeld Theater, NYC on December 27, 1927! Here we were 93 years to the day hearing the number. Crytzer engaged with his worldwide audience, confessing he was unaware of the coincidence.

A sign of a really good live stream is not realising how quickly the hour had flown by. More next week, guess the year...

Post-gig Crytzer engaged in a Zoom chat with tap dancer DeWitt Fleming Jr. who has worked on the jazz scene with Wynton Marsalis, Bobby McFerrin and Christian McBride.
