Good to hear Haruka again. Her Sunday sessions way down yonder in New Orleans were always a delight. Today, however, she was vacationing in Tokyo and jamming with half a dozen Japanese jazz musicians. The drummer did all the announcements in his native tongue, although he did sing I Want a Little Girl in English, so I have no idea of each individual's names.
The format was Haruki and the rhythm section with the various guests stepping up to the plate culminating with a final free for all. A bit like the old Tuesday night jams at the Black Swan although here the test piece was Royal Garden Blues as opposed to Straight no Chaser.
Prior to this, Haruki and the tenor player blew Crazy Rhythm followed by the girl clarinetist who gave us Buddy Bolden Blues. The male of the clarinet species did indeed go Way Down Yonder in New Orleans and, as mentioned earlier the drummer man requested a little girl before the final RGB.
As expected, everyone soloed with the piano girl laying down a few fine stride choruses, both clarinetists displayed their dexterity and there were some seasonal quotes from the bass player. Needless to say Haruki was in good form, possibly because she wasn't combining tailgate trombone playing with babysitting as is her wont when in New Orleans.
