This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Music of Bill Evans live streaming from Kansas Smitty's - Dec. 3

Bill Evans' 1961 engagement at the Village Vanguard yielded two albums - Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby -  and they formed the basis of tonight's session from Kansas Smitty's. Kit Downes sat at an upright Yamaha piano (not the usual grand seen and heard on the fifty plus live streams from the London venue) working in the company of Conor Chaplin and Martin France. 

Downes spoke to a real, live audience (and countless virtual guests from across the globe) to outline the evening's gig - a selection of numbers culled from Evan's two albums, simple yet highly effective. 

Waltz for Debby opened the hour long set; typically Evans, Downes immersed in the music from the off, not exactly head bowed a la Evans, definitely no cigarette, Chaplin on top of it all, and France, very much the senior man of the trio, in Paul Motian masterclass mode (superb brushwork). 

Gloria's Step, Herb Ellis' Detour Ahead, the live audience dug it (an occasional whoop and holler), Downes and co knew the material inside out. Milestones and Solar to finish. It had been another excellent night at Kansas Smitty's.
