Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Justin Rothberg Group - Hurricane Mouse

Justin Rothberg (guitar/mandolin); Todd Groves (saxes/flute/melodica); Jon Price (bass); Hiroyuki Matsuura (drums); Andy O'Neill (perc.)

Rothberg, a Bachelor of Music graduate of City College New York, is a new name to me although he has been active Stateside for the past 15 years in a variety of settings across the genres encompassing Broadway shows and touring with Petula Clark.

Because of the diversity of his musical interests it's difficult to pigeonhole this under any heading other than music. There's jazz-a-plenty as there is rock with only the occasional roll.

Rothberg, who composed all 12 tracks, is an accomplished guitarist. A funkster, I guess, at heart he nevertheless manages to slot all of his influences into the ever widening field of jazz. That he manages to do this so seamlessly is in no small way due to the input of his colleagues. Groves, in particular is outstanding on his various instruments.

It's one of those albums aimed at being every thing to every body whether it succeeds or not is up the listener to decide. My suggestion would be to check out Green Room. If this is to your taste then listen to the lot on Bandcamp
