Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Farewell my Lovely - R.I.P Jeanie Lambe

1979, I'd met this girl at a party, she claimed to like jazz. I mentioned that I was going to a gig at the Corner House the following night and did she fancy going? She did.

It was Jeanie Lambe, singing and looking beautiful alongside husband Danny Moss blowing tenor who my friend also thought looked beautiful - well maybe handsome! When we kissed goodnight, I guess we weren't kissing each other!

I'd heard Danny several times, particularly with the Dankworth band. He was unique inasmuch as he wasn't a hardbopper like most of his peers but more a semi throwback to the rich full sound of Hawkins and Webster.

I'd never heard Jeanie, prior to that night but it wasn't long before I began collecting whatever albums I could find. One of my favourites was recorded 4/5 years on - Midnight Sun - her interpretation of the title track mega close to being the definitive version, maybe an eyelash behind June Christy but streets ahead of the rest.

Jeanie and Danny moved to Australia where, Danny died in 2008

The somewhat belated news of her death has left me feeling very sad. The fact that, it would appear, she spent the past six years of her life in a coma only serves to intensify that sadness although, I suppose the knowledge that her suffering is now over is something.

Annie, Norma, Cleo, Claire, Clare, Carol, Jeanie - perm anyone from ...

Jeanie Lambe left us on May 29, 2020, age 79.

Sadly missed - Rest In Peace.
Lance
