This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Geordie Hour to Jazz Time to Alice Grace - August 23

A busy day: first Adrian Cox's Sunday Service live stream (excellent, as always) followed by a movie theater (US spelling!) date with Sam Spade in Prohibition Bar, the dialogue as sharp as a modernist's zoot suite. Then, home in time to catch the final twenty minutes or so of Gary Hogg's unique programme on Radio Tyneside. 


The Geordie Hour, as the title suggests, broadcasts music written or performed by Geordie born and bred musicians or those who've attained Honourary Geordie status. This week's jazz track featured the West Jesmond Rhythm Kings playing Flamin' Mamie from the band's Jazz Lips album. To close the show Mr Hogg played Nick Pride and the Pimptones. Aye, it doesn't matter which radio station you tune-in to you're sure to hear a Geordie!  

Keeping it local, Mike Dixon's Jazz Time on Aycliffe Radio featured a wide range of material: Tubby Hayes to Chris Barber to Art Blakey and Fletcher Henderson. Newton Aycliffe lad Rick Laughlin's band popped up again with Late Night Gambo and big band fan (and friend of BSH) Tony Eales selected six drummer-led tracks.

Just time to open a bottle of Theakston's Pale Ale (4.5%) before figuring out how to logon/tune-in/fiddle about with the Newcastle Jazz Co-op's latest live stream featuring the Alice Grace Quartet. In due course Ms Grace's gig will be reviewed right here on BSH.
