Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Lockdown Lindsay - May 25

Lindsay Hannon (vocals/ukulele/shakers)

This Monday night's blues stream began with a shock to the system - Lindsay was drinking tea! Blues mamas don't drink tea! They may smoke it, but their street cred is gone if they're caught drinking the vile concoction. However, this was a temporary lapse and Earl Grey gave way to some gin laced with coke - we were back on track and the Earl returned to the top of his monument.

The reason for the cuppa, Lindsay explained, was that she'd woke up this morning - as blues singers invariably do until that fateful day when they don't - and decided to go walking. A navigational error meant that the walk covered more ground than she'd anticipated and she eventually clocked up 9 miles which is a bit like walking from Tyne Dock to Newcastle - hence the need for 'a nice cup of tea'. I've never quite worked out how it is that in this country everyone but me seems to think that a cup of tea is the panacea for everything other than pandemics.

However, I'm digressing, my remit is to comment on the music which I can do in one word (possibly two) - brilliant!

Tonight's half hour covered some of her previous material which didn't hurt at all. With Lindsay, it's not just the singing but it's also the background info she provides to the songs and the singers.

Casey Jones; Bad Bad Girl; Down Here and Trouble in Mind were tonight's sagas and, once again, demonstrated the rich seam of American folklore that is out there waiting to be mined by someone prepared to do it.

Lindsay Hannon is that someone.
