Many years ago I had a book on blues written by Alan Lomax which, for some obscure reason, I passed on to one of my colleagues in that well known Newcastle music store. I later regretted it although, with the advent of Google and Lindsay, it is no longer such a great loss.
Lindsay frequently quotes from Lomax's archives and speaks so authoritatively it's like hearing the great man himself with inter-round summaries by Lindsay!
Tonight the subject was women. As Lindsay pointed out there are lots of songs about women that are written and sung by men but relatively few songs written and sung by women about women.
Lindsay was in good voice and looked equally good - her hair colouring inspired one Facebook wag to refer to it as "The highlight of the week"!
Four songs, all given our gal's earthy delivery - she shouldn't be singing in her des res, she should be hollerin' the blues in a downtown bar in 'Bama, or maybe a jukejoint in Philly.
Satisfied; Vera Hall's Black Woman; Rosie and Bessie Jones' Rollin'. These sessions just fly past. If Lomax was around today he'd be recording them for The Library of Congress. Maybe Alexis Korner would also have recognised her affinity for the blues - he'd have asked her to join his band.
