Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: 3D Jazz Trio - I Love to See You Smile

Jackie Warren (piano); Amy Shook (bass); Sherrie Maricle (drums).

An all female trio who swing their collective asses off! If you don't believe me listen to Back at the Chicken Shack - move over Jimmy Smith, the girls have come home to roost.

On piano, Warren can be delicate, she can be power driven, she can be whatever the number demands - just listen to her blues drenched chords on Angel Eyes. And what about Maggie? Just as last Friday (VE Day) proved, in the hands of the right person the most mundane of tunes can be turned into a magical musical tapestry. The girls do just that with Maggie which was chosen because it was a favourite of Jackie Warren's mom - it's a favourite of mine now!

Shook is given plenty of space which she takes full advantage of be it arco or pizzicato.

Maricle we know as leader and driving force behind the Diva Jazz Orchestra and she makes her presence felt here too, although not in an overbearing way.

Not a lot more to say except that if you follow this link to the band's website and, as I suggested earlier, listen to Chicken Shack you'll know where I'm coming from and that I'm not dealing out mere throwaway chauvinistic praise (who me?). Not many male trios come even close to this!
