Bebop Spoken There

Sullivan Fortner: ''I always judge it by the bass player: If the bass player is happy, it's going to be a good night". (DownBeat, February 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Ewan Bleach's Sunday Serenade - May 31

Ewan Bleach (piano, clarinet, vocals)

An uncooperative Facebook denied access until fifteen minutes in...arrrgh! At which point a shaggy-haired Ewan Bleach was in the process of introducing Irving Berlin's Sunshine as a piano-vocal. In mentioning his regular piano gigs at Camden's Green Note, Bleach requested audience participation for three songs about drugs...Willie the Weeper, piano and vocals (sing-a-long), The Ghost of Smokey Joe (piano, vocals) and Jerry the Junker (piano, vocals).

Time for a waltz...When I Grow Too Old to Dream. Earlier this year at Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club, Bleach sang Midnight Blue when appearing with Frog and Henry and he reprised the number during this evening's lockdown performance (piano, clarinet and vocals).

To close, a 'moon' song, which reminded Bleach to remind us that next week (Sunday June 7) his two hour live stream will be all about the moon, that's songs with moon in the title. Oh, yes, the title...By the Light of the Silvery Moon.

Below is Bleach's set list with a few hastily scribbled notes...

Sunshine Berlin - piano, vocals
Seems Like Old Times piano, vocals (Tuba Skinny)
In the Gloaming piano, vocals (Louis Armstrong)
After You've Gone piano, clarinet, vocals
A Sunbonnet Blue and a Yellow Straw Hat piano, vocals (Sammy Fain)
Body and Soul piano, tenor sax, vocals (Bleach's 'sheet music of the week)
The Old Man of the Mountain piano, clarinet, vocals (for balboa and shag dancers)
If You See My Mother (Si tu vois ma mere) clarinet only (with piano coda)
I'm Confessin' (That I Love You) piano & clarinet simultaneously, vocals
Here it is, Tomorrow Again piano, vocals
Willie the Weeper piano, vocals
The Ghost of Smokey Joe piano, vocals
Jerry the Junker piano, vocals
When I Grow Too Old to Dream piano, vocals (Romberg & Hammerstein)
Midnight Blue piano, vocals
In the Middle of a Kiss (comp. Sam Coslow) piano, tenor sax, vocals
Midnight Blue piano, vocals
By the Light of the Silvery Moon piano, vocals.
