Clifford Brown (trumpet); Lou Donaldson (alto); Horace Silver (piano); Curley Russell (bass); Art Blakey (drums).

Today is Don Forbes' birthday - happy birthday Don - haven't seen you around for a while. For many years, trumpet player Don fronted the cleverly named Safe Sextet at the old Jazz Café back in the day when Keith Crombie was Führer.
It was a cracking band that included, from time to time, Pete Gilligan (piano); Paul Gowland (saxes); John Rowland (tenor sax); Eric Stutt (drums) and, probably, Paul Grainger (double bass) as well as Don on trumpet.
One of their party pieces was Horace Silver's Quicksilver which is also
on this Birdland LP (there's an alternative take on Vol 2). The insertion of a
few bars of Oh You Beautiful Doll followed
later by The Donkey Serenade in the middle
of the tune never fails to raise a smile each time I hear it whether played by
the Art Blakey Quintet (the Jazz Messengers were in the future) or by the
Safe Sextet. Listen to the Blakey version from Volume 1 here.

PS: I note a used copy of BLP 1521 Volume 1 listed online at 155 euros! I'd better put my copy back in the safe!
