This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. RIP Ronnie Hughes

LondonJazzNews has reported the sad news that trumpet player Ronnie Hughes died on April 1.

An internationally well respected musician who was playing well into his late 80s - maybe even longer as this YouTube clip from 2014 shows.

My memories go back to the earlier part of his career when he was with the great British big bands such as Jack Parnell and Ted Heath. He was actually married to Heath's vocalist Lita Roza - I was very jealous. Not just because he had such a beautiful lady but because he played trumpet with the country's number one band and, at the time, I was struggling with the same instrument before defecting to saxophone.

In later years, long after Ted's death, Moira Heath reformed the Heath band with Don Lusher as MD and, naturally, Ronnie Hughes was in the trumpet section.

He will be sadly missed throughout the profession.
