Good to hear a piano/bass/drums trio that isn't seeking to extend the boundaries of a tried and tested formula. And yet, in many ways they are. The material is all original but played in such a way that I couldn't help but think I'd heard it before. This isn't a charge of plagiarism but rather a compliment that they have managed to introduce new songs in such a way as to appeal, although not exclusively, to us Old Souls.
Shearing and Bill Evans mastered this trick as has Paul Edis more recently and a little closer to home.
Ten tracks - 6 by Davidian and 2 each by Ousley and McMahon. - are not only exquisitely played but also beautifully titled to the extent that they are crying out for someone to add words to the very accessible melodies.
Neither as introvert as Evans nor as brash as Peterson or Garner, Davidian has found a lovely groove between the extremes. The interplay between bass and drums is evidence of how closely their minds work with McMahon closing the gaps and making this a very tight trio.
A gem.
