Another hot Blue Note quintet featuring one of the most underrated trumpet players of the era and a tenor player who, as the years have rolled by since his death in 2001, seems to become more and more influential. There is rarely a jam session goes by without someone calling a Joe Henderson number.
On this particular album (I'm listening to the CD version which has a 'bonus track') the two horns each contribute 3 tracks and they prove to be slightly more exotic than the usual Blue Note offerings although, when the chips are down, it's back to the hard bopping.
Henderson appeared on 30 Blue Notes as well as 5 under his own name and, although I haven't heard them all, I doubt if there's a lemon among them.
Dorham and Henderson had an immediate empathy and recorded 3 albums together, Prior to this the trumpet player had played with Charlie Parker and the Bird droppings must have stood him in good stead with Henderson who had
cited Parker as an early influence.
Up until now, I haven't encountered a bad Blue Note although there's still a long way to go and Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch is on the horizon...
