This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Rise and Rise of the House of Ushaw

Where better to have a cup of posh coffee and a cake on a Saturday afternoon than the luxurious Jazz Lounge at splendid Ushaw College?
And what a lovely surprise to find ex-Gala Big Band senior member George Hetherington in the corner tinkling the old ivories on some standards and classics from the Great American Songbook and beyond.
The lounge was busy and the college bustling with people on guided tours, so much so that we heard little of George as our short visit coincided with his break during a guides' talk by the scale model of the college just outside the lounge.
It's open every Saturday from 1 until 5 with a selection of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, savouries and cakes and George is there throughout.
