Bebop Spoken There

Kurt Elling: ''There's something to learn from every musician you play with''. (DownBeat, December 2024).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music 2021: Hugh V Williams @ The Globe October 4.

So the end of another amazing festival which this year had something for everyone (even Lance and Russell). What a great cultural asset to the city of Newcastle this event is. It is a privilege to be able to sample such a wide variation of musical experiences.

The final gig couldn’t have been more appropriate - a classic contemporary jazz trio. Most of the songs played were from the band's recent album release the ‘Cooganesque’ titled Equidistant Between. Aside from some great named songs such as Retrospective Shredfest and Print Reaction.  Hugh V William’s also names his tunes in diary fashion thus we were treated to 13th January 2018 and 15/16th January 2018 not played one after another but at least played in chronological order (I wonder what the 'V' stands for hopefully Vaughan).

George Crowley is a phenomenal player both technically and creatively. Together with tremendous bass playing from Hugh V Williams and the driving drumming of New Yorker Devin Gray they  form a highly accomplished trio. Musically the band were always dynamic and kept everyone on the edge of their seats wondering as to which direction the music would take next – real jazz!
A fitting finale to a fabulous festival.

Steve, I go to jazz and 'improvised music' gigs year round, unlike some conservative 'I know what I like and like what I know' festival types who are rarely, if ever, seen at gigs elsewhere. Perhaps I'll see you at a New Orleans/Dixieland session or a bebop or big band gig or a jam session...
