This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music: Abbi Finn Trio @ The Black Swan - Oct. 3

The Abbie Finn Trio served as an hors d'oeuvres to the afternoon jam session at this year's Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music. The main performance space in the Black Swan enabled a modicum of social distancing to be observed as sitters in and punters alike made their way in to the room. 

Pinocchio opened the set with tenor saxophonist Harry Keeble laying down a marker. Cheese Cake, a good old good one if ever there was one, with Main Man bassist Paul Grainger pointedly quoting Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise, we were off to a good start.  

Keeble's Ginnungagap has readily become a staple in the Abbie Finn Trio's set, a tune that, on repeated hearing, reveals something more of itself each time. Oh, yes, the composer produced a tremendous solo! 

When I Fall in Love offered balladic relief, Monk's Well You Needn't returned us to the bopishere and to close, Wayne Shorter's ESP. Russell
