Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Kristian Borring - Out of Nowhere

Kristian Borring (guitar); Rick Simpson (piano); Mick Coady (bass); Jon Scott (drums).

The Danish guitarist is no stranger to BSH, he's had several albums reviewed within these hallowed (virtual) portals and all have impressed those of us with ears for the real deal and this truly is the real deal.

Recorded in London in prepandomic times the musician met up in Nick Taylor's Porcupine Studios to cut 8 sides as we used to say before sides became tracks before becoming downloads before becoming whatever next. Being somewhat of a Luddite, I opted for a CD which duly arrived in several pieces - well it had come from Australia - so rather than wait for an Antipodean replacement, I went for the download option.

It didn't matter as good music is good music irrespective of the format. I mean some folks are probably still searching for the mythical Buddy Bolden cylinder.

Six of the compositions are by Borring along with the title track and Bird's Bloomdido. The latter track has an amazing Monk meets Bud Powell solo by Simpson who is phenomenal throughout. Scott throws in his two bits on this number and Coady ensures the pulse pulsates.

Borring, who also joined in the fun on Bloomdido, has a couple of balladic numbers where Simpson sneaks off for a coffee or a walk around the block. Out of Nowhere (Coady/Scott!!!) and his own What You See is All There is brings out the guitarist's lyricism. To paraphrase an old Irving Berlin song title, he is as melodic as a pretty girl.

Only thing that puzzles me about this highly recommended release is how a Dane, an Irishman and two Englishmen walked into a London studio to record an album that was subsequently dispatched to me from Australia! Whatever, it's available now on Bandcamp - Lance

Five to Six; Epsilon Eridani; Three Rivers; Palace Fever; Out of Nowhere; What You See is All There is; Hipster; Bloomdido.
