Album review: Jon Gordon - Stranger Than Fiction

Jon Gordon (alto sax); Derrick Garner (trumpet); Alan Ferber (trombone); Reginald Lewis or Tristan Martinuson (tenor sax); John Ellis or Anna Blackmore (bass clarinet); Jocelyn Gould (guitar, voice); Larry Roy (guitar); Orrin Evans or Will Bonness (piano); Julian Bradford (bass); Fabio Ragnelli (drums).

A nonet album drawn from the collective personnel listed above featuring, in the main, the leader both as composer, arranger and stunning soloist although the others also have outstanding moments.

Possessed of a prodigious technique that is occasionally reminiscent of Phil Woods which is hardly surprising as Woods was one his early inspirations and teachers although, these days he's undoubtedly his own man. No less an authority than Wayne Shorter is quoted as saying; "Gordon has embraced the history of the instrument, carrying with it the ability to extend music as a universal language."

That maybe a somewhat ambiguous statement but it doesn't detract from the fact he is one of the best alto players I've encountered in recent years. Add his compositions and arrangements into the mix and you have the ultimate performer.

Well worth checking out. Promo video. Lance

The last Jazz book I bought was Jon Gordon's 2020 book of no less than forty-eight interviews with a wide variety of jazz musicians; some well-known and many not too well known. I'ts a great read.--Mike F.
