Bebop Spoken There

Gary Bartz: ''Music is nature's gift to man. It's the only religion. We're living in a terrible era, but what a beautiful thing music is. Look how it brings us together like religion is supposed to; and with no language barriers.'' (Jazzwise September, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday Night @ the Globe: The Milne Glendinning Band - Oct. 24

Sunday night is jazz night at the Globe and this week it was the Milne Glendinning Band featuring Jazz Co-op guitar tutor Steve Glendinning and singer, songwriter, lyricist, gig organiser and occasional bar person Debra Milne along with Mike Clark on bass guitar.

Apart from her own originals, Debra added lyrics to a couple of compositions by Alan Glen as well as collaborations with Bradley Johnston.

It can be a hard slog sitting through a set of originals whether by a band or a singer - any band, any singer - and I would have welcomed perhaps a couple of standards or maybe her version of a good old bopper such as Billie's Bounce which I've heard her sing many times. The nearest she came, I think, was in one of the numbers she wrote with Brad - Too Busy for Thinking. This one requires some vocal dexterity and Debra handled that with ease.

Steve played good guitar, he should be heard more often, and Mike did the biz - unobtrusive but effective.

I've followed Debra's progress over the past few years and the directions she takes are always interesting. Lance

Just Tell me What's Going on; Blame Game; Am I Missing Something Here?; Dawn at Sunset (w. A.Glen); Where Am I Going?; The Pick Up; Soul Mate (w. Bradley Johnston); You Can't Stay There (Sting); Don't Come 'Round Here; Easy Go (w. A. Glen); Most People; Man in a Room; Too Busy For Thinking (w. Bradley Johnston) + a couple I missed re running(ish) for the bus!
