Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Monocled Man - Ex Voto

Rory Simmons (trumpet, keys, producer); Chris Montague (guitar); Jon Scott (drums)

Eddie Condon called his wonderful autobiography We Called it Music. In a later book: Eddie Condon's Treasury of Jazz he titled a chapter on the more modern styles of his day as They Called it Music.

This album definitely falls into the latter category!

So, rather than take cheap shots at something that's beyond my ken, I'll merely say that Gateshead born Chris Montague is a great guitarist, Jon Scott is one of the more forward looking drummers on the scene and that Rory Simmons blew up a storm with Jamie Cullum at Sage Gateshead the other week and he is equally impressive here - great tone, amazing range - he also produced the album and, on occasion, tinkles the plastics.

Having said all that, check out the press release*. In the meantime, here's a link so you can make up your own mind. Monocled Man? Maybe I'm the Blinkered Man and, although there are some tasty moments, I don't think I could listen to a whole one! Lance
