Bebop Spoken There

Abbie Finn: "Even though there's a lot of great work being done to promote women in jazz, I still come up against some attitudes! I pulled up at a recording session with my drums in the car and the studio owner said, 'I'm sorry, this space is reserved for the drummer!'" - (Jazzwise April 2023).

The Things They Say!

The Mick Shoulder Quartet featuring Alex Clarke @ The Lit & Phil - Oct. 22

Alex Clarke (alto/tenor sax); Dean Stockdale (piano); Mick Shoulder (bass); John Bradford (drums)

Wearing an outfit that Amanda Staveley would have been proud of Ms Clarke was on the money from the get go. However, unlike Mandy, Alex had a strong team to help her deliver the goods and deliver them they did.

Alternating between tenor and alto, the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2020 nominee took us through a choice selection of standards ably supported by three north east stalwarts. Stockdale, Shoulder and Bradford, stars in their own right, ensured the show ran smoothly.

From the opening Who Can I Turn to? on tenor to the closing Charlie Parker blues (was it Au Privave?) on alto, the crowded room knew they'd got in on the ground floor of something special. In years to come ...

In between we heard the multi-titled Theme From Black Orpheus; It's You or No One; In a Sentimental Mood; If I Were a Bell; You and the Night and the Music; Our Love is Here to Stay; and Moanin'. The latter number had some paint stripping alto as well as some Blakeyesque drumming.

The thunderous applause at the end said it all!

Next gig in the lunchtime series is on Nov. 19 with the Matt Forster Quartet - Lance
