Bebop Spoken There

Christian McBride: ''I believe we are living in a historically embarrassing moment in American history.'' - Downbeat December 2025

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

KSTV: Kit Downes & Joe Webb - March 10

Kit Downes & Joe Webb (pianos)

There's only two words to describe tonight's session - Doppelt Lecker - which, for those who don't speak German or buy Felix cat food, means Double Delicious and these two cats tonight were certainly that!

Two-piano sessions are fraught with danger, there's a car crash waiting to happen around every note, chord and phrase. However, when you've got Downes and Webb at the, figuratively speaking, wheel you know the emergency services can rest easy although, as ever, a St. John's Ambulance piano tuner no doubt was on standby.

A good mix of material began with Jarrett's Chandra followed by the Beatles' I'll Follow the Sun. It soon became apparent that this was no cutting contest but an evening of mutual respect as each embellished the other's playing without overpowering it.

A Joe Webb original, Collblanc, celebrated a Barcelona metro station. I suspect the music was perhaps more beautiful than the station but who knows? Joe certainly does as he's not long returned from mainland Europe.

Benny Golson's Whisper Not is a great tune when played solo but as a duo it truly is doppelt lecker.

The next number had four hands on one piano - the title escaped me.

Kit brought a gift for Joe. A tune he'd composed entitled - wait for it - Webbster!

Nice one!

Time to switch pianos with Joe moving to the grand and Kit to the upright. This was something else! I thought it was the best number of the night - How About You?

The set finished with a slow dreamy number that I knew but couldn't quite place.

Lecker!
Lance.
