Ralph Porrett, a student at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and a finalist in BBC Young Jazz Musician 2020, is studying jazz guitar with John Parricelli, Stuart Hall, Colin Oxley and Tommy Emmerton. He has asked our readers to fill in a survey to assist with a project he is researching.
Under the supervision of jazz pianist Gareth Williams, Ralph is researching the
differences between ensemble members and the creative output of the group. More
specifically, how the variety in education, experience, and age within a
quintet effects the originality of an album in the hope that his research will
contribute to the ongoing discussion about inclusivity in music and provide
figures to suggest that diversity is essential for the progression of jazz.
Allocating 10 points between 4 categories (not each) for
each album enables a value of innovation to be obtained - see graphic for example.
