The posts on favourite jazz guitar albums prompted to me look through my collection and pick out some favourites of mine. Not all led by a guitarist, but where I love the album and the guitarist’s contribution.
Wes Montgomery/Johnny Griffin – Full House (Live at Tsubo). With the Miles rhythm section. Wonderful live session. Electric.
Dave Cliff + Brian Lemon Trio – But Beautiful. With Allan Ganley, Dave Green. Beautiful playing from everyone.
George Barnes/Ruby Braff Quartet – The Best I’ve Heard. This album inspired me to take up jazz guitar.
Jim Hall Trio – Circles. Jim at his finest.
John Scofield – Time on my Hands. My favourite of the several Sco albums that I have.
Louis Stewart – I Thought About You. With John Taylor, Billy Higgins, Sam Jones. World class jazz guitar.
Rebecca Kilgore with Dan Barrett Six – I Saw Stars. For Bucky Pizzarelli’s absolutely great acoustic rhythm playing and chord solos.
Ken Peplowski, Jon-Erik Kelso, Vince Giordano, Marty Grosz - Remembering Louis. A great album. Four guys sat around a single mic and it’s perfect.
Richie Kamuca Quartet - Richie. With Mundell Lowe, Nick Ceroli, Monty Budwig. A very moving album, Richie’s last and Mundell was part of it.
Biréli Lagrène & Friends – Live
at Vienne (DVD). Some fantastic gypsy jazz, perhaps the best you’ll ever hear.
Astonishing playing from Bireli.
