Bebop Spoken There

Joe Alterman: ''All I wanted to do growing up was to sound like Erroll Garner playing "Poor Butterfly." I thought that was the coolest sound I'd ever heard.'' (DownBeat November, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

KSTV: Dave Archer, Peter Daley, Jas Kayser livestream - March 9

Peter Daley (organ); Dave Archer (guitar); Jas Kayser (drums).

Peter Daley's a new name to me. A former product of that hotbed of jazz, Birmingham Conservatoire, he laid down the kind of grooves you'd expect from an organ trio - did he not! With Dave Archer at his funkiest/bluesiest best and Jas Kayser providing the power behind the throne - no, not that throne - he took us to New York, Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, Philly and a western London suburb.

Yes, the groove was in.

I didn't catch all of the titles. Some weren't announced, some were overrode by a phone call (good to hear from you Annie) and some I didn't recognise that I thought that I should have done. It didn't matter it was the feeling they conveyed.

Green Onions was true to Booker T and Satin Doll reminded me of hearing Wild Bill Davis play it with Duke at Newcastle City Hall. But, don't get me wrong, they still put their own stamp on it.

Hip Hug-Her was another one by Booker T which I knew almost by heart but couldn't remember the title until now. Well 54 years is a long time between tracks.

Lotus Blossom had a dreamy feel to it which fitted the mood I was in. The final number saw all three hitting that dirt road out of Ealing - a different kind of Broadway - let's hope they'll be back again soon and, how's about if they were augmented by Xhosa or Alec - wow! I'd queue all night for that one!
