Sunday Night @ The Globe - Bradford/Shoulder/Williams - March 28

Mick Shoulder (bass); Mark Williams (guitar); John Bradford (drums).

Mick promised to deliver something different and he certainly did! Difficult to pigeonhole, it moved in mysterious ways suggesting an almost new branch of the jazz guitar trio genre. A branch that, whilst moving away from the norm still retained the ingredients so vital to jazz as we know it. The melody was there, the harmony was there and, although the rhythm only occasionally moved into the four-in-a-bar comfort zone, it didn't detract - after all it worked for Brubeck!

All the compositions were by Mick and if, as I was taken to task for, the band name is unimaginative, the tune titles weren't!

8 Stone Wringing Wet; 7 Go Mad in a Discotheque; Black Rocks and Eagles; Washboard Arthur; Lonely Toad; Yakisoba Dog and End Song

The latter tune was written by Mick after a relationship had broken down. A ballad full of beauty and sadness. If someone had composed such a song for me (dream on!) I'd be crawling back on my hands and knees! Back in the day, this would have been worthy of Frank and Ava if someone had put words to it.

Mark, although generally restrained, played some lovely stuff. Mick was as sound as he always is and John Bradford, whom I'd only previously heard at the occasional jam session (remember them?), proved to be, on the night, the man for the job.

Last night I forgot to put the clocks forward - these guys didn't!

Another Super Sunday!
Lance
