This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Livestream from Ronnie's: Heidi Vogel presents Sarah Vaughan's "The Brazilian Albums" - March 18

Tonight, Ronnie Scott’s presented live - vocalist Heidi Vogel singing tunes from Sarah Vaughan’s Brazilian Albums. I had not heard of this singer although she has appeared at many prestigious events eg Montreux Jazz Festival for Quincy Jones, The Sydney Opera House and with The Krakow Symphony Orchestra. She performed as a soloist for the 2019 BBC Proms at The Royal Albert Hall giving a recital of The Sacred Music of Duke Ellington.

Tonight she was accompanied by a great band, Ivo Neame on piano, Tom Farmer bass, Shaney Forbes drums, and special guests Rachel Cohen alto sax and Josue Ferrira guitar and vocals.  Watched virtually by almost 500, her songs included Double Rainbow an Antonio Carlos Jobim number, Dreamer, The Face I Love, Dindi, You’re Everything a song written by Chick Corea and Roses that Bloom in the Spring a duet with Josue Ferreira on guitar singing in Portuguese and English. She has an incredible range and texture with lots of emotion and control.

Then out of the blue Ian Shaw appeared with a bobble cap and sweat shirt, had his arm twisted, and ‘reluctantly’ performed with Heidi. Absolutely brilliantly they sang Make this City Ours Tonight. Heidi finished with a beautiful rendition of Goodbye.

If you don’t know Heidi already, keep an eye out for her in the future I  certainly will.
