Preview: Sinatra @ Sage Gateshead

Tonight at Sage Gateshead there will be a rare, indeed unexpected, appearance by none other than the Chairman of the Board, Mr Francis Albert Sinatra. Well, not quite, but go with it...It was back in 2015 that the BBC Big Band took to the stage in Sage One, Sage Gateshead's world class 1700 seater concert hall to perform a centenary tribute to the man, Frank Sinatra. 

BBC technicians were on hand to record the performance and the whole show was first broadcast on Radio 2 in its popular (Friday) Sunday Night is Music Night Night series. Joining the band that night in November 2015 were three of the British jazz scene's most respected singers; Liane Carroll, Claire Martin and Ian Shaw.

During the interval, Jess Gillam (a familiar voice over on Radio 3) takes a look at Sinatra's arrangers - all household names - Don Costa, Gordon Jenkins, Billy May and Nelson Riddle. So, why not tune Radio 2 at seven o'clock to hear three consummate artists tipping their hat to the consummate artist, Frank Sinatra? As Ol' Blues Eyes quipped on the legendary Basie Live at the Sands album: How did all these people get in my room?!
