Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dulcie May Moreno: Lockdown Session - June 19

The first of tonight's triple-header featured vocalist Dulcie May Morino in a sublime performance accompanied from afar by Stephen Bridgland on guitar. When I checked in Dulcie was working out on Poison Ivy, the Lieber/Stoller number made famous by The Coasters.

Perdido swung gently and we met Dulcie's beautiful white cat - I think our Daphne was jealous as she refused to look at the screen.

Is You Is or is You Ain't my Baby? may be grammatically suspect but it's still a great tune with a great lyric and, if Dulcie had been singing it to me there would have been no doubt as to my answer!

God Bless the Child suffered from some interruptions - not least by the cat wanting out and the child remained unblessed. Hallelujah I Just Love Him So swung along nicely whilst Peel me a Grape had me reaching for the fruit bowl.

Puttin' on the Ritz, Sway and Undecided followed - Dulcie was in fine voice but, unfortunately, I had a date with Rico and Spats so I missed the final numbers.

I'll make sure my rota is better scheduled next time!
