This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Robert Northern (1934 - 2020)

Robert (Bob) Northern, also known as "Brother Ah" because of his habit of beginning sentences with an extended 'Aaaah', played French horn with both symphony orchestras and jazz ensembles as well as studying various world music cultures.

I admit that I wasn't over-familiar with his work other than as a name amid personnel listings however, his c.v. is so impressive that, by association, his standing in the world of music is guaranteed.
Just some of the names with whom worked: Donald Byrd, Cannonball Adderley; Miles; Trane; Gil Evans and many more. He was part of Monk's legendary Town Hall Concert, a long term member of the Sun Ra Arkestra and, for the past 20 years, a jazz disc jockey in Washington DC. 

His achievements are too many to list. 

Check out his obituary in the New York Times. This will give you some idea of a man to whom music knew no frontiers - it was as much the song of the birds or the chirping of crickets as it was notes written on score-paper.

Robert Northern left us on May 31 aged 86. Rest In Peace.
