Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Bill Harper Remembers Don Weller

So sad to hear of the death of Don Weller - one of the giants of jazz in every sense of the word. In spite of his somewhat intimidating appearance, he was a lovely gentle man, with a great sense of humour & boy could he blow up a storm! 

I remember a great gig that I did with him and the late, equally great, Dick Morrissey at Newcastle's University Theatre back in the 1980's - a fantastic night. Don looked at my early Yamaha electric piano with great disdain, saying "Ah, a Sootyphone I see!!!" 

 However, we became good friends and, at various gigs over the years, he never forgot to remind me of the Sootyphone. 

A huge miss to jazz.
