Bebop Spoken There

Dave Puddy: "Eventually we paid our entrance money [to Eel Pie Island] and fought our way to one of the many bars where we could buy our Newcastle Brown and retire to the back of the heaving dancefloor. There must have been lights somewhere, but my memory remains of being in some dark cavernous wonderland." - (Just Jazz July 2020)

Dave Rempis:Ten years from now, I can see musicians streaming concerts in real time and charging a minimal amount for people to watch.” - (DownBeat September 2013)

The Things They Say!

Hudson Music: Lance's "Bebop Spoken Here" is one of the heaviest and most influential jazz blogs in the UK.

Rupert Burley (Dynamic Agency): "BSH just goes from strength to strength".

Today

As we all know there are no live gigs taking place in the immediate future. However, any links to jazz streaming that are deemed suitable - i.e. with a professional approach - will be considered for posting.

Keith Tippett R.I.P.

The sad news is in that pianist Keith Tippett died yesterday (June 14) aged 72.

Peter Bevan recalls several visits Keith made to the south of our region:

June 1985 he appeared with Chrissie Holmes and Tony Levin in the Darlington Arts Centre Garden Bar.

October 1990 with Andy Sheppard in the Arts Centre's Jazz Nights series (the Shades of Lipstick tour).

October 2001 he was with Peter Fairclough in Wild Silk at Durham University's Music Department (which I think was part of a weekend programme paying tribute to Keith).
-----
I recall Keith playing a solo piano set in support of the Steve Lacy Sextet at the Corner House, Newcastle in 1982.

In October 2010 he gave two concerts at The King's Hall in Newcastle University. Firstly as a duo with Aki  Takase and secondly in trio format with drummer Tony Levin added.

Sadly memories are all we have now of possibly the most original British pianist ever.

Rest in Peace.

Is it my imagination or did Keith Tippett pull out of a JNE gig at Gateshead Old Town Hall through ill-health?

He was briefly in King Crimson and - I believe - Soft Machine.
