This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Paul Booth in Lockdown

Paul Booth (tenor sax/piano/soprano sax/etc.)

As I heard the strains of Bye Bye Blackbird It felt like I was walking across the Williamsburg Bridge in New York listening to Sonny Rollins way back when. Come to think about it, I doubt if there are many people walking across the bridge these days!

It was, of course, Paul Booth blowing unaccompanied tenor in another solitary session. He wasn't unaccompanied long, due to the magic of technology he was able to provide piano backing for most of the numbers that followed.


The theme he chose was birds so we had The Beatles' Blackbird; When the Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbing Along (for his dad's birthday); Skylark; Bob Marley's Three Little Birds (with a reggae riff from melodica, bari sax and tin whistle); A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square and Loro which is a parrot. For this last tune we had our man playing soprano backed by himself playing alto, tenor and baritone.

Surprisingly, there were no yardbirds in the musical aviary

There were a few technical hitches throughout but Paul assures us they will be sorted out for next time which will be...?
