This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD/Digital Reviews: Chris Biscoe Profiles Quartet - Live at Campus West & Chris Biscoe - Wobbly Rail Five

Chris Biscoe Profiles Quartet: Chris Biscoe (alto sax/alto clarinet); Tony Kofi (alto/tenor sax); Larry Bartley (bass); Stu Butterfield (drums). 2011.

Chris Biscoe has released two cracking albums. One is brand new and one a reissue from 2011. The new album is only available on a digital download, the reissue is available on both digital and CD.

Biscoe, a player sometimes undeservedly overlooked, is outstanding on both alto and soprano. sax and the rarely heard alto clarinet. He can switch from the flowing lines of Cannonball Adderley to the fragmented grittiness of Ornette Coleman or Eric Dolphy. Indeed the older album is very much in the Dolphy vein with four of his tunes, plus a couple from Mingus, one from Monk and a Biscoe original. Kofi too excels sometimes on tenor as opposed to his more usual alto. Sound support from Bartley and Butterfield.

Wobbly Rail  Five: Chris Biscoe (alto/soprano sax/alto clarinet); Pete Hurt (tenor/soprano sax); Liam Noble (piano); Steve Watts (bass); Jon Scott (drums). 2020.

As well as Biscoe, the strangely named Wobbly Rail Five has some full-bodied tenor from Pete Hurt, fine piano from Liam Noble and effective bass and drums from Watts and Scott.

The sounds are contemporary without being beyond comprehension and both albums are well worth checking out on
