This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Review: Andrew Oliver - April 8

Live solo piano! - that's how Andrew Oliver billed his first foray into the live stream gig world. Ensconced in his London home the American pianist played for an hour or so without recourse to sheet music as he selected numbers from a hand written list.

Ragtime, stride, a blues of sorts, Oliver played with consummate skill, in between chatting about the compositions, their composers, the performers and his own many current projects including recent and forthcoming recording sessions (watch out for a Rivermont release), a regular podcast featuring the likes of Lil Hardin, Earl Hines and a virtual get together with classic jazz era percussionist Nick Ball.


Jelly Roll Morton featured heavily, Howdy Quicksell was in there, Willie the Lion Smith, Spencer Williams and a whole lot more. Kansas City Stomp, Tishomingo Blues, Oliver's version of a Blind Boone medley of rags and James P Johnson's classic stride number Carolina Shout. 

Andrew Oliver reckons he's bagged the Wednesday evening live stream slot, catch him next week (April 15).
