Dulcie May Moreno @ The Globe, May 21

I must say that it’s lovely to be wearing my reviewer’s reins, after recovering from an awful
stomach bug which left me exhausted for about 2 weeks. And this gig was just the job to cheer
me up. The singer and guitarist usually work together as a duo, and they’d just had an hour or so with Paul before the gig. Ms Moreno said she had a frog in her throat, (didn’t show), but none of this hindered the band from giving us a thoroughly enjoyable evening, which was also part of the Late Show events.
The first three songs were good but a little restrained: Comes Love; Caravan; and That Old Black Magic, but then Ms Moreno really showed what she could do with No Moon At All, and on all the songs which followed. The voice was gentle and sweet when appropriate, keenly emotional and heartfelt  for songs such as Stormy Weather, and showed skillful improvisations for numbers such as Fascinating Rhythm. The lads did their stuff admirably, we expect nothing less, excellent guitar, especially when he played for the slower numbers, and Paul was great as usual, notably the solo on Moanin’ and the lovely intro to Falling In Love With Love, which was just bass and voice. I particularly liked the singer’s very slow version of Come Rain, Come Shine, just once through the chorus, with no Instrumental solos, a neatly different way to do the song.
Other songs performed were Lover Come Back To Me; Early In The Morning (I think); Tell It Like It Is; Taken In The Night (both of these new to me); Night And Day; and finally, Do I Move You?
Another good night at the Globe.
