Ray Gallon has been working on the New York jazz scene for more than thirty years, yet it is only now that he has recorded an album of his own. This evening at Spike Wilner's place, our born and bred New Yorker was joined by two of his favourite musicians (two of my favourite people, said our pianist), fellow New Yorkers, David Wong playing bass and revered drummer Kenny Washington.
That's the Question, composed by Gallon, is on the new recording (released on Cory Weeds' Cellar Live label on May 21) and the trio played it on this live stream. First impressions...Monkish, swinging, another top class pianist. Craw Daddy, Jerome Kern's Yesterdays, Gallon reaffirming the view that there is an undoubted bop era, Monk influence to his approach. Time for a ballad, My Old Flame, Wong's sound recalling Neils-Henning Ørsted Pedersen accompanied by Washington's sensitive brush work.
A Gallon original titled Plus One turned out to be a real cooker, great stuff. And to close, Gallon played Kitty Paws, the first track on his forthcoming album. The new album, title Make Your Move, looks like being one to check out: www.raygallon.com.
