Bebop Spoken There

Dominick "Domo" Branch: ''Most people say drummers can't write, they're just time-keepers only beating on things. But I have a very musical brain.'' (DownBeat February, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

International Jazz Day @ The Globe - Friday April 30 - The Matt Carmichael Quartet

(Picture from Globe website)
Wow! Friday is really going to be a special day! New Orleans Bands will be marching down the high streets, bebop will be played over the tannoy outside of every pub and Albert Ayler will provide easy listening for the shoppers in ASDA.

And, if you are housebound, every radio station will be playing Stan Getz or Dizzy Gillespie.

However, it isn't that simple as, that very same day is also: International Hairball Awareness Day, Honesty Day and Oatmeal Cookie Day so the competition is stiff. At least we can be thankful it wasn't last Sunday which was Hug a Plumber Day. If you need a plumber on a Sunday you'd have do a lot more than merely hug him/her!

Such things, of course, are above The Jazz Co-op who celebrate their 7th anniversary as the UK's first jazz cooperative at their Newcastle HQ - The Globe - with a livestream featuring BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year finalist Matt Carmichael with his fellow countrymen: Fergus McCreadie (piano); Ali Watson (bass) and Tom Potter (drums). This co-promotion with Jazz North East should be something special. As it's online only there won't be any oatmeal cookies and you won't have to hug any plumbers who, par for the course, turn up a week late.

Details/tickets.
