The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album launch: Zoë Gilby - Aurora. Livestreamed from Gosforth Civic Theatre - April 16

Zoë Gilby (voice/lyrics); Noel Dennis (trumpet/flugel); Mark Williams (guitar); Andy Champion (bass); Russ Morgan (drums).

Technical hitches made for a delay but, once they were sorted out, the picture and the sound quality were excellent. Zoë looked good in a redish gown contrasting with her more casually attired sidekicks for this launch of an album celebrating the music of Tom Harrell with lyrics composed by Zoë herself.

It's difficult for me to add to what I posted in my review of the album last Friday. Zoë's lyrics capture the mood of Tom Harrell's compositions and her distinctive delivery make this an important addition for anyone interested in Harrell's work. Her introduction to each piece gave further insight into the thinking behind the lyrics which, incidentally, were approved by Harrell and his wife Angela on the condition that different titles were used.

Apart from Zoë's voice, Noel, Andy, Mark and Russ all made telling contributions with Noel in particular also capturing the mood of the great man. In fact, if Tom Harrell ever needs a dep...
