Bebop Spoken There

Gary Bartz: ''Charlie Parker was my introduction to the religion of music. And so he's always with me .'' - Downbeat November 2025.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jazz night @ The ARC with Jeremy McMurray @ the Pocket Orchestra

(Press release)

Jazz returns to ARC this September. The fantastic ‘Pocket Orchestra’ led by Jeremy McMurray are back with an evening of relaxed jazz music. Put Thursday 30 September in your diary, when the band that brought Stockton a string of extremely popular sold-out events between 2017 – 2020 return to do the same again.

The ‘Pocket Orchestra’, led by pianist Jeremy McMurray, comprise some of the North East’s top musicians. The well-respected jazz outfit play a wide range of jazz standards, Latin and foot tapping swing music. With a repertoire incorporating a mixture of lyrical melodies and rich harmonies from the great American songbook, to the full passion and fire that is associated with the bebop and idiom. This is an experience you don’t want to miss!

The evening is a great opportunity to meet-up with friends, have a drink and chat, and enjoy some fantastic live music. The evening will be kept informal, so there’s no need to dress to impress!
