Interesting you mention Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee. I discovered them following on from my interest in R&B (Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley) and liked them a lot. That somehow led me to blues and boogie woogie piano as sometimes there would be a pianist with them. I particularly liked Jimmy Yancey. Then an older work colleague played me 'Night Train' by Peterson. That was it - hooked on jazz.

I remember these marvellous concerts at the City Hall. It's been forgotton, I think, that it was Chris Barber himself who brought over these Blues stars from the USA to tour with his band. At the time the Barber band was filling the largest concert halls in the UK, as a result none of the promoters were interested in forking out more money to pay for a guest musician when the audience couldn't be increased. Chris solved this personally by bringing over great blues artists and paying their expenses out of his own pocket. Sony Terry and Brownie McGhee and Muddy Waters have been mentioned, but others I remember were James Cotton, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, Memphis Slim, Little Walter and Otis Spann. Incidentally Chris also brought over some famous Gospel guests too.
