This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Sunday Service with Adrian Cox & Joe Webb live streaming from Toulouse Lautrec - Nov. 21

Adrian Cox decided to abandon Facebook in favour of YouTube. Oh, dear! exclaimed Cox upon realising the camera set-up was not as intended, we were seeing Adrian and buddy Joe Webb at an angle of 180°! The one o'clock start came and went as Cox went off-camera to attend to technical matters. Meanwhile, pianist Joe played some 'incidental music' to entertain the waiting masses. Some time later, 1:32pm to be precise, our duo made a start.
Today's virtual gig featured the music of Barney Bigard and Duke Ellington. The Mooche, with Webb's stomping chordal intro, opened the much delayed Sunday Service. Straight on with more Ellington  - I Let a Song Go Out of My  Heart. Adrian Cox asked his many followers to stick with it despite the comment facility not being readily available to all. And with that our man sang St Louis Blues. Perhaps the switch to YouTube affected matters but the sound quality wasn't quite as good as in previous weeks, the vocals in particular sounding a little distant. That said, Adrian's impeccable phrasing hadn't changed a jot. More Duke - Clouds in My heart.  

Billy Strayhorn's A Flower is Lovesome Thing momentarily took it down. More Bigard-Ellington with Charlie the Chulo. A piercing blast brought in Clarinet Lament. Time for a couple more - Jump for Joy from the early forties featuring more of Adrian's great vocals and on to Mood Indigo. To close the Sunday Service's first venture into the world of YouTube, Adrian attended to the usual parish notices and then our duo went out on Barney Bigard's Ready Eddy. More next week.
