Album review: Allison Neale - Quietly There

Allison Neale (alto sax); Peter Bernstein (guitar); Dave Green (bass); Steve Brown (drums).

Just when I was beginning to think that the art of lyricism had been lost, that the values of Paul Desmond, Lee Konitz and Art Pepper no longer had a place in our music, this CD arrived. It was probably pushed through the letter box by a postman who maybe wondered as to how I found the time to listen to so many CDs. It's something I wonder about myself and the truth is that, there could be a massive bonfire coming up shortly! One certainty is that this disc won't be among the blazing inferno!

Allison Neale is one of those players where the gender card isn't played. If it was, I know quite a few guys who would be heading for the hills.

I first heard Allison at Pizza Express where she kept Scott Hamilton on his toes. There was a Scarborough Jazz Festival gig that absolutely brought the house down in a set with guitarist Dave Cliff - the bands that followed had it all to do!

Now Dave Cliff isn't on this album but he's put a pretty good dep in - Peter Bernstein!

As choice a selection of tunes as anyone with a leaning towards the West Coast could wish for and, if I wasn't already "spoken for" my proposal would be in the post!

If this is the only album you buy this year - buy two as you'll either wear it out or one of your friends will nick it the moment your back is turned - well mine would!

You want stars? Maybe a constellation or two for starters ...

Album of the year!
Lance.

It's released on Sept. 11 on Ubuntu Records  UBU0062 but I couldn't even wait until tomorrow to write about this one - this is the biz!

Darn That Dream; Midnight Sun; Split Kick; Quietly There; I'm Glad There is You; Motion; Spring is Here; Lollipops and Roses; 2 Degrees East 3 Degrees West; You Do Something To Me; I Should Care.

I have the CD she made with Dave Cliff, Simon Thorpe and Matt Skelton. 'Melody Express'.
A very lyrical player with a great sound.
