Who's the drummer?

Browsing through some old photos, Russell came across this one of bass supremo Dave Green taken at Newcastle's Corner House. Now the drummer looks very familiar to me but neither of us can put a name to the face can anyone help?

Trevor Tompkins?

Trevor Tomkins! Now, I wonder what the gig was? Ian Carr? Don Rendell? Michael Garrick?

Russell said...

It wouldn't have been Garrick because the upright would have been where Tompkins' kit is on the stage.

Elaborate further!

I remember Garrick playing the piano on the left of the stage as you looked. That's where the piano usually was.

Trevor Tomkins.

Russell, I've seen the upright at either side of the stage. I note from the vintage photo pages Ronnie Pipe w. Kai Winding and Memphis Slim both had the upright positioned at the right of the stage. So that is inconclusive and, even if it wasn't Garrick it would have been somebody either on piano or electric piano.

Come to think of it, Billy Harper did, on occasion, sit to the right, as we looked at the stage, as did Gerry Richardson. Re Garrick, definitely stage left...not that it confirms anything.

I think it 's Trevor Tomkins with Dave Green and Michael Garrick on Piano with Don Rendell - judging by the age they look - 1972-3 ish
