I spent a happy hour in (virtual) Leeds watching some retro jazz moments courtesy of Steve Crocker and LeedsJazz Lockdown #15.
Mads Mathias always brings Joe Mooney to my mind which, when it comes to jazz-singing, is praise indeed. Tea For Two came close to dethroning Lady Anita on this number!
The Paul Edis Sextet with Ellie Smith on trombone played Angular. I'm guessing Ellie was a late dep. She did fine although the band weren't as tight as they usually were around this time (2014).
Jesse Bannister's Play Out had Zoe Rahman on piano and Jesse blew some boundary stretching alto.
Some finer tenor playing by Benn Clatworthy. This was the same quartet that played the Globe a few years back. For Heaven's Sake, for heaven's sake, was just about as good as it gets and Cecilia Coleman on piano brought back memories of that night at the Jazz Coop's upper room jazz bar.
Ian Shaw singing But Not For Me was most definitely for me - was that Rick Simpson on piano?
The hour was drawing to a close but not before some delicate piano jazz from the Dan Whieldon Trio, some funk from the Dan Shout Quartet. Shout is well named he's one of the toughest (in the nicest possible terms) tenors around and the grand finale which saw the Kate Peters Big Band take us out with Shiny Stockings.
On top of all that, if you had some local knowledge there was the opportunity to win a large Wensleydale cheese in the raffle!

Ian Shaw's pianist was Barry Green. In Kate Peters' band it looked like Martin Langhawn on piano and the Managers Big Band's tenor player Kyran Matthews on baritone.
