This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ballads Before Bed III - June 3

The third volume of Ballads Before Bed and this one was a day later than usual as pianist Paul Edis rightly chose to show respect for George Floyd - #theshowmustbepaused #blacklivesmatter. Six numbers tonight, beautifully paced, half an hour then bed.

That's All (Alan Brandt/Bob Haymes) opened the programme with Edis keen to point out this was the song title not the end of the show! First recorded by Nat Cole, Bobby Darin had something of a hit with it. What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life? (Michel Legrand) maintained the late night vibe as our London based performer took a look at John Coltrane's contemplative composition Naima.

An occasional glance at a monitor, no words were necessary this evening, Edis reflected on Mingus' Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, respected Ellington (as one should) with a measured In a Sentimental Mood and then it was time, almost, to turn out the lights but not before a marvellous rendition of Stardust (Hoagy Carmichael).
