The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Remembering Jimmy Stewart

Came across this cutting in a cupboard whilst looking for something else!  It doesn't have a date but I estimate it as being from about 25 years ago in 1995.

Jimmy Stewart, was a well known figure on the trad jazz scene with a great sense of humour.

I remember when, at bass player Ray Jobling's funeral, they played a Duke Ellington record. Jimmy said, "Why didn't they play one of the numbers that Ray used to sing like Please Don't Talk About me When I'm Gone"!

I haven't seen this for ages, Lance! We were all so fond of Jimmy - apart from his drumming, he was such a sweet guy, really kind - and with that great sense of humour. He was with Mike's band, the West Jesmond Rhythm Kings, from early on, until his sad death - and this was in 1995. I remember it was the year before my Mike retired, and that was 1996. I know that the WJRK's played their usual Tuesday night gig at the Lonsdale, and I think it was later on that same night that he died.
