Another captivating 30 minutes from Blonde Mama Lindsay - the Baroness of the Blues.
Tonight's topic was gambling and songs related to the subject. Death also played a big part as witnessed in the opener, Leadbelly's Gallows Pole.
Those old blues always tell a story and in Lindsay they have the perfect narrator. Her pitch perfect, earthy, renditions really capture the mood and, if this had been radio, you'd have sworn it was a souped-up race record from the earlier part of the last century.
Stewball, a legendary British racehorse (some versions say American), and once again Lindsay did it justice. As with all the songs, Lindsay gives us chapter and verse which, for the enthusiast, is the the red beans on the rice.
Dying Crapshooter Blues. This was my favourite if only for the lyric - "Dig my grave with the ace of spades".
Stagger Lee, Lindsay informed us, had been recorded by 489 different artists - stagger(lee)ing! I first came across it as a fledgling when Tennessee Ernie recorded it as Stack O Lee - one of the last 78 rpms I bought before I discovered jazz and real blues.
Full credit to Lindsay for these streaming sessions, they are both entertaining and educational. I learn something every week and I've been hawking my soul around that (virtual) crossroads in Mississippi for a lot longer than she has!

I agree with all of the above and recommend that all BSH readers look up the lyrics to Dying Crapshooter Blues" The quote Lance picked out is just one of many gems. Great song!
